FCC will vote to restrict Huawei and ZTE purchases2019-10-28 18:59 by DanielaTags: FCC, Huawei, ZTE
Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Ajit Pai on Monday announced a two-part proposal that would ban carriers from using federal subsidies to purchase equipment or services from Huawei or ZTE, the two most prominent Chinese providers. The FCC said Huawei and ZTE were already on the list of companies that pose a threat, but that the draft order would "establish a process for designating other suppliers that pose a national security threat," potentially opening the door for new additions. "When it comes to 5G and America's security, we can't afford to take a risk and hope for the best," FCC Chairman Ajit Pai said in a statement. "As the United States upgrades its networks to the next generation of wireless technologies — 5G — we cannot ignore the risk that the Chinese government will seek to exploit network vulnerabilities in order to engage in espionage, insert malware and viruses, and otherwise compromise our critical communications networks." "The concern is that hostile foreign actors could use hidden 'backdoors' to our networks to spy on us, steal from us, harm us with malware and viruses, or otherwise exploit our networks," Pai added. "And there are mounting reasons to believe that the Chinese firms Huawei and ZTE pose an unacceptable risk to U.S. national security." This is the latest in a series of actions by the U.S. government aimed at barring U.S. companies from purchasing Huawei and ZTE equipment. Huawei and ZTE would have 30 days to contest the FCC's national security risk designation. Read more -here-
