According to recent report by Bloomberg, chinese hackers have allegedly implanted tiny spying microchips in servers used by multiple data centers run by some 30 giant US companies, such as Apple and Amazon Web Services. The story claims that one chip, which was reportedly planted on servers' motherboards assembled for a company called Elemental by a separate company called Supermicro Computer, would allow attackers to covertly modify these servers, bypass software security checks, and, essentially, give the Chinese government a complete backdoor into these companies' networks. Supermicro also manufactured equipment for Department of Defense data centers, the CIA's drone operations, and onboard networks of Navy warships, the report pointed out. The news comes against a backdrop of growing concern over potential surveillance and security issues in Chinese-made equipment that has hindered the country's bid to become a global technology powerhouse. If this story is true, this means that the Chinese government may well have been harvesting data from two of the world's largest corporations and service providers since 2014 – all with a microchip 'the size of a grain of rice'.
