A new lawsuit is taking on Apple's data collection practices in the wake of a recent report by independent researchers who found Apple was continuing to track consumers in its mobile apps, even when they had explicitly configured their iPhone privacy settings to turn tracking off. In a proposed class action lawsuit, plaintiff Elliot Libman is suing on behalf of himself and other impacted consumers, alleging that Apple's privacy assurances are in violation of the California Invasion of Privacy Act. The discovery was made by developer and security researcher Tommy Mysk, who previously found that many Apple apps bypass VPN connections when sending data to Apple. A YouTube video posted by Mysk reveals how the App Store collects your personal data in real-time including the keys you tapped on, the apps you looked at, the ads that you viewed, and even the length of time you spent looking at an App Store listing. The App Store also sent details about the users' devices, including their ID numbers, screen resolutions, internet connection types, keyboard languages, and - notably - the kind of information that is often used for device fingerprinting.
