Apple removes YouTube app from iOS 62012-08-07 09:57 by DanielaTags: Apple, iOS, YouTube
A YouTube app will reportedly not be included in the new operating system for iPhones and iPads, in another indication of a growing split between Google and Apple. The latest developer release of Apple's iOS 6 (Beta 4) no longer includes the YouTube app that has shipped with the iPhone since the device debuted in June 2007. Users will eventually be able to download an app capable of playing YouTube videos - Google is working on one right now - but it won't be integrated into Apple's iThings. In June, Apple revealed that the iOS Maps app - also present on the iPhone since 2007 - would no longer obtain map data from Google. Apple appears to have planned that move since it acquired map company Placebase in July 2009, and map companies Poly9 and C3 Technologies in 2010 and 2011. Apple's new Maps app for iOS 6 similarly avoids any support for Google's Places, instead partnering with Yelp, and makes no effort to incorporate Google's Latitude location sharing, having introduced Apple's own device location and Find My Friends services tied to iCloud.
