An iCloud class action lawsuit has been settled out of court, with Apple agreeing to pay a total of $14.8M to US residents subscribing to one of the paid storage tiers during a specific time period. Anyone who paid for an iCloud subscription between Sept. 16, 2015 and Jan. 31, 2016, and had a US mailing address associated with their iCloud account, will be receiving a refund. The one exception to that is if the email address you signed up to iCloud with during that time is no longer active, because you won't receive the notice confirming you are a "class member." The accusation states Apple broke its Terms and Conditions by using third-party servers to store iCloud user's data - it should actually have stored that data on its own servers, in line with the contract they set out. The size of the payment isn't expected to be large. It will depend on what iCloud tier a user subscribed to. Those who subscribed to the 1TB tier will receive more than people who used the 50GB or 200GB tiers. Money from settlements like this can be shared between millions and the lawyers also take their cut. Affected Apple users can also opt out of receiving the payment and sue Apple themselves.
