Apple has successfully completed its acquisition of Shazam, the popular song identification app. The deal was announced back in December 2017, but for a while it looked like European regulators might step in and throw a wrench in the works. European Union regulators launched an investigation of the acquisition in April over concerns the Apple-Shazam marriage might unfairly give Apple Music a leg-up in the music streaming business. The EU then approved the acquisition earlier this month. For Apple, Shazam will give it technology and algorithms to bolster its music service. By making Shazam ad free, Apple may be able to increase usage and gather more data that can help it with Apple Music, trends and its algorithms. "Apple and Shazam have a long history together. Shazam was one of the first apps available when we launched the App Store and has become a favorite app for music fans everywhere," said Oliver Schusser, Apple's vice president of Apple Music, in a statement. "With a shared love of music and innovation, we are thrilled to bring our teams together to provide users even more great ways to discover, experience and enjoy music." Shazam was founded in 1999 by Chris Barton, Philip Inghelbrecht, Avery Wang and Dhiraj Mukherjee. In the early days of the service, customers had to call into a hotline to have music identified but that changed with the arrival of the Shazam app on Apple’s App Store in July 2008 (it came to Android a few months later).
