Apple is preparing to swap the proprietary Lightning port on its iPhones next year for the nearly universally-embraced USB-C, claims company analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Before we give Apple too much credit, the company is currently being backed into a corner by the EU's Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee, which voted last month in support of legislation that would force companies to adopt USB-C on all small and medium-sized gadgets. The rule is intended to simplify things for customers and reduce e-waste.

Since the ‌iPhone‌ 5, Apple has kept the Lightning port on the ‌iPhone‌, despite much of the industry moving to USB-C. In a tweet today, Kuo said that the latest supply chain survey indicates that Apple will ditch Lightning in favor of USB-C in 2023. USB-C would improve transfer speeds on the ‌iPhone‌ and improve charging speeds.

Kuo also believes USB-C will increasingly become the focus (Opens in a new window) for "USB-C-related suppliers of Apple's ecosystem" as they prepare for the switch. Not only will it mean a whole new range of USB-C accessories being required for the launch of iPhone 15, but also supporting anyone with existing iPhone accessories who want to keep using them with the new iPhone models.
