Apple loses iPad trademark in China

A Chinese court has ruled against Apple in an ongoing legal battle over the 'iPad' trademark, which could lead to Apple marketing the highly coveted product under a new name.

The Municipal Intermediate People's Court in the town of Shenzhen (near Hong Kong) rejected Apple's claim because Proview Technology, the company accused by Apple of infringing on the iPad trademark, legally registered the name for use in mainland China back in 2001 (and in Taiwan in 2000). Although Apple bought the rights to use the iPad name in Taiwan in 2009, Proview still retains the right to the name in mainland China, Xinhua said.

The right to use the iPad name in China is crucial for Apple, where the company is in the process of opening more stores. Executives have said they have just scratched the surface in China in terms of sales.
