Apple is reportedly working on satellite technology that will allow to connect its phones to the internet without requiring a land-based carrier like AT&T or Verizon.

Apple is said to have hired both executives and engineers from the aerospace and satellite industry, including Skybox Imaging alumni Michael Trela and John Fenwick, who are leading the team. These two formerly headed up Google's satellite and spacecraft division. New hires include former Aerospace Corporation executive Ashley Moore Williams, as well as key personnel from the wireless networking and content-delivery network industries.

The goal of the team is to help strengthen Apple's ability to beam data to its devices as the global race to 5G connectivity continues with China leading the way, but the project does not have a clear direction yet, according to Bloomberg, which cited those familiar with the plan.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has also reportedly marked the project as a high priority, even though it's still in the early stages. That said, it's not clear if Apple is aiming to build its own satellite constellation in space, or if it'd be a network that takes advantage of existing satellites via on-the-ground equipment.

While the satellites could potentially provide internet, which could then allow Apple to have less reliance on traditional wireless carriers, the report says they could also be used for other purposes such as "more precise location tracking for its devices."
