Apple has apologized amid worldwide outrage after it was discovered that recent software updates were slowing down older iPhones. "We know that some of you feel Apple has let you down. We apologize," the company said on its website. "We have never - and would never - do anything to intentionally shorten the life of any Apple product, or degrade the user experience to drive customer upgrades." The company issued a statement saying it released the update last year in order to help older phones handle the fact that "Lithium-ion batteries become less capable of supplying peak current demands" and to prevent an older iPhone from "unexpectedly shutting down to protect its electronic components." Apple says it's taking two steps early next year to help customers. First, starting in January, it's reducing the price of an out-of-warranty iPhone battery replacement by $50 - from $79 to $29. That's only for people with an iPhone 6 or newer model. It will also issue an iOS software update with new features that give users more visibility into the health of their iPhone's battery, so they can see for themselves if its condition is affecting performance.
