Apple and chipmaker Qualcomm have finally settled their years-long legal battle over billions of dollars in royalties and licensing fees. The two companies agreed Tuesday to end all litigation, including with Apple's contract manufacturers, in a settlement that involves Apple paying Qualcomm an undisclosed amount. The companies also came to six-year license agreement, effective April 1, as well as a multiyear chipset supply agreement. This means that Qualcomm's modem chips are likely to be used again in Apple's newest iPhone models. The iPhone used to rely entirely on Qualcomm's chips, but from 2016 Apple started using rival Intel's modem chips in some models. Meanwhile Intel announced it is abandoning plans to build 5G modems for smartphones after it reportedly missed a number of deadlines for development of a chip that would have powered the first next generation iPhone next year. Intel says it will continue to meet customer commitments for 4G smartphones, such as the iPhone, but does not expect to launch any 5G smartphone products – including those it had planned to launch in 2020.
