Amazon's cloud services giant Amazon Web Services (AWS) is getting into the encrypted messaging business. The company has just announced that it has acquired secure communications service Wickr — a messaging app that has geared itself towards providing services to government and military groups and enterprises. It claims to be the only "collaboration service" that meets security criteria set out by the NSA. Companies moving to hybrid work environments due to the COVID-19 pandemic are increasingly focusing on protecting their communication with business partners across remote locations. "Wickr's secure communications solutions help enterprises and government organizations adapt to this change in their workforces and is a welcome addition to the growing set of collaboration and productivity services that AWS offers customers and partners," Schmidt said. The move is a big deal for AWS. Wickr already counts militaries, Customs and Border Protection, and other significant organizations as customers. This could help Amazon make up for losing the JEDI contract and otherwise give it an edge when negotiating government deals. If an agency already has an Amazon license thanks to Wickr, it might be more willing to buy other services. Read more -here-
