Amazon has recently announced that it will start delivering packages using a sidewalk robot called Amazon Scout. The Scout has six wheels, is powered by an electric battery, and moves at a walking pace.

Amazon has begun testing six of the cooler-sized, six-wheeled robots in a neighborhood in Snohomish County, Washington, about 60 miles northeast of Amazon's Seattle headquarters. According to Amazon, the robots will be accompanied on their rounds by human overseers to begin with. This is to ensure that the devices can "safely and efficiently navigate around pets, pedestrians and anything else in their path."

"We developed Amazon Scout at our research and development lab in Seattle, ensuring the devices can safely and efficiently navigate around pets, pedestrians and anything else in their path," Sean Scott, the vice president of Amazon Scout, said in a blog post on Amazon's website.

Of course, getting this model to work will require rethinking the way package delivery is organized. Right now, Amazon hires people to drop packages off on customers' front porches, where they sit unattended until the customer gets home and collects them. But Amazon's sidewalk drones don't seem to be designed to drop packages off. Instead, a video accompanying the announcement shows an Amazon robot pulling up in front of a customer's house, and the customer coming out to meet the drone.
