Amazon confirmed on Wednesday that layoffs had begun at the company, two days after multiple outlets reported the e-commerce giant planned to cut around 10,000 employees this week. The initial cuts at Amazon will impact roles on the devices and services team, per a memo shared publicly by Dave Limp, senior vice president of devices & services at Amazon.

"After a deep set of reviews, we recently decided to consolidate some teams and programs," Limp wrote. "One of the consequences of these decisions is that some roles will no longer be required."

The number of layoffs remains fluid because the decisions are being made business by business, according to a person familiar with the matter. While the cuts may total 10,000 people, there is no specific target for total job cuts, the person said.

Amazon spent much of the last two decades in growth mode, spending billions on new warehouses, cloud-computing data centers and hiring to back a range of bets. Investors trusted that Bezos, who had preached building long-term value since the company's initial public offering, would make that pay off in the long run.
